The first cut...

Last Autumn we started the work of methodically ploughing and re-seeding our first fields, in order to promote new growth of a rich grass, ideal for the sustenance of our beef herd over winter. We waited patiently, defended valiantly against the onslaught of fallow deer, and with the warm dry weather followed by the recent rains, we have a superb crop ready to cut and bale.

Our goal at Barelands is to provide for our livestock as sustainably as possible, growing as much of their food as possible right here on the farm, thereby reducing food miles, and ensuring perfect provenance of the end product.

We cannot wait to have this mature patiently over the summer months into the rich silage that will see them through the winter. A busy Jubilee week ahead, hoping to dodge the rain that is forecast. Be sure to visit again this weekend to see the photos!
